Great Falls ES Attendance Update

For the week ending on May 3, 2024, our overall Chronic Absenteeism rate is 8.9% which is a DECREASE from our 20.4% rate on May 3rd of last year.  We sincerely appreciate all you're doing to support our ability to keep this rate down.

Please don't hesitate to check ParentVue or call the school should you be interested in knowing your child's absentee data as we end the school year strong!

Good Morning Great Falls ES Families,

The school year is flying by rapidly, the weather is getting warmer, spring sports have officially started, and the pools will soon be open.  At Great Falls ES, we are still going.  As we enter into the last quarter, excitement builds alongside that familiar end-of-the-year energy. Like a long car ride, even the most enthusiastic students can get a little restless as the destination comes into view.

This is where we still need your help. There is much more academic ground to cover in these last eight weeks. We have tests to complete, projects to finish, and final concepts to solidify.  We will work toward our Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning and celebrate our successes and accomplishments from this year.

Your support at home is not just helpful; it's crucial. Please consider:

  • Taking a few moments to review end-of-year schedules and routines with your child.
  • Ensuring these schedules and routines remain school-focused and learning-centered.
  • Remembering and reminding students that school attendance remains essential as we work toward wrapping up the school year will help them stay organized and concentrate on their remaining schoolwork.

We appreciate your support as we strive for a smooth and successful learning experience during this last quarter.

Class Placement Survey

Believe it or not, there are only eight weeks left until school is out for the summer, and we are beginning to think about and plan for next school year.

As in the past, we welcome your participation as we plan for class assignments.  In making placements into the next grade’s homerooms, we seek to build positive communities rather than assigning students to a particular teacher, which would limit our ability to build effective classroom dynamics. We strive to create balanced classrooms and we take into account the many new students who will join us next school year. While we do believe that it is important for children to have friends in their class, we also want them to be open to forming new friendships while at school.

Every class will have a blend of children with diverse needs, personalities, and learning abilities. You have the opportunity to complete an optional “Class Assignment Parent Survey” for the upcoming year. Please take a few moments to give us your insights on this survey.

Please submit the electronic form no later than May 10, 2024.  Late submissions or separate emails will not be considered. Thanks for continuing to have trust in our school and working together to create the most successful environment for your child(ren) at Great Falls ES each year!

STEAM Lab Updates

Thank you so much for your continued support and donations.  I am trying to keep my STEAM Wish List updated with grade-level needs and classroom “wants.”

In kindergarten, we have been learning about Paleontologists and Quality Engineers over the past couple of weeks. Next week, students will create some “real-life” robots and examine repeating patterns.

First Graders learned how to make penny rubbings and constructed a building out of Q-tips.  Next week, they will analyze the design of an object and explore how to assemble a robot out of paper cups.  They will then learn about the real-world career of a robotic engineer.

Second graders finished their Peeps Parachute challenge.  Students had to design a parachute that would slow down the rate at which a cup falls after being dropped.  Next week, they will use the engineering design process to create a boot for an astronaut landing on the Moon.

Third grade finished up their Wind-Powered Maze Challenge.  They explored wind power and balanced/unbalanced forces by constructing a marble maze with obstacles.  Next week, we will start our Space Capsule challenge.  Students will learn about Astronaut Katherine Johnson and design, build, and test their space capsule.

Fourth grade is continuing to work on their NEXT National Park Challenge.  All classes have selected one National Park and have started their research project.  After their research, they will create a presentation about their National Park.

Fifth grade learned some basic knot-tying skills.  This week, they started a new musical instruments challenge.  Students will learn about what makes sound and how instruments can change notes. They will then use the engineering design process to design and build a musical instrument.  This ties right into their Sound Energy Unit from the science curriculum.  Students can bring some recyclable material from home to assist with their builds.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Coming Soon

Students in grades 3-12  took the SEL Screener during the month of March, providing updated information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s counselor. Sara White [email protected] for grades K (Couch and Smock), 1, 3, and 5. Courtney Barber [email protected] for K (Gould), 2, 4, and 6.

Sister School Book Drive Extended

The annual Sister School Book Drive has been extended until Tuesday, April 23.  Don't miss out on the chance to donate books and make a difference! We are collecting new and gently used books to donate to students at our sister school – Glen Forest Elementary.  Donations will be collected until NOON on Tuesday, April 23.  The collection boxes are located outside the main entrance to the school and in the main lobby.

We are looking for book donations for preschool – 6th grade readers. Books open minds and opportunities.  Share the gift of reading with a student from Glen Forest Elementary.  Every donation makes a difference!  Thank you for your generous support.

Allergy Season

Allergy season is upon us! Tree pollen has been moderated to high, and we are seeing a lot of uncomfortable students in the clinic. Signs and symptoms of allergies include congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes nose and throat, runny nose, fatigue, cough. If your student has known seasonal allergies, it is time to start them back on their allergy medication as directed by your physician.

No School Tomorrow - April 10

Wednesday, April 10, is an FCPS holiday;  all schools and offices will be closed for Eid al-Fitr.

Eid Mubarak to those in our Muslim community celebrating! This year's Eid al-Fitr artwork was created by Mark Twain Middle School student Tazrian S. In Islam, Eid al-Fitr is a 3 day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. #OurFCPS

Dear Great Falls ES Families,

A total solar eclipse will occur this Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County.  The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m.  The maximum eclipse will occur around 3:20 p.m. during our GFES dismissal time; therefore, our classrooms will stream the eclipse live from the NASA website

Streaming through the NASA website will allow our students to view the eclipse in the most optimal format with commentary and models provided by experts within the astronomy community.   Because the eclipse timing overlaps with dismissal, students must understand the importance of safe viewing practices while transitioning home.   Our teachers and staff will reinforce the following guidelines as students exit the building and ride the bus:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear.  This applies to students and staff; we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • We will not be providing school issued eclipse glasses for students.  We understand some parents have purchased them for their children, and we will allow them to be worn outside and on the bus rides home.
  • PM recess will be indoors.

Should you wish to take your children out of school to view the eclipse from outside as a family, please feel free to do so.  We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information, and support our efforts for safe viewing by reminding children about eclipse safe viewing practices.

Thank you!
Sara Harper

Dear Great Falls ES Families,

The official start of Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes a season filled with new beginnings and exciting learning opportunities!  In this newsletter, I want to highlight three important items:

Celebrating Our Diverse Community
At Great Falls ES, we embrace the rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds that make up our student body. Throughout the year, we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances. Please mark your calendars and participate in or attend our celebration of our differences, our World Fair, on April 18, 2024.

To ensure all students feel included and supported, we encourage families to contact their child's teacher regarding accommodations. This may consist of adjustments around lunch, prayer/meditation spaces and times, or even modifications in classroom instruction. We believe in fostering an environment where all students feel comfortable expressing their unique traditions and beliefs.

Attendance as we approach Spring Break
Great Falls ES’s Chronic Absenteeism rate is currently 8%, a significant improvement from where we were on this date last year at 19%.  As a reminder, a student is considered chronically absent if they are out for 10% or more of the school year.  Thank you for all you do to partner with us as we strive to make every day count!

Historically, our absenteeism trend spikes around winter break and spring break. As we approach spring break, I want to remind you that the VA state code requires us to contact families of students with seven or more absences for the year. One way to help us with these outreach requirements is to complete and submit this prearranged absence form and submit it to Abeer El Gharib prior to your child(ren)’s absence.

Is your child feeling sick?
While the state of Virginia, FCPS, and Great Falls ES encourage positive and regular attendance whenever possible, please be mindful to keep your children home when they have a fever or are showing signs and symptoms of infectious or communicable diseases.  We are experiencing an uptick in sickness spreading throughout our classrooms. We do deep clean and bleach classrooms with excessive absences daily;  however, the best way to stop the spread is to keep students with symptoms home from school.

Sincerely,
Sara Harper

Calendar Updates:

This year, spring break is March 25-29 and the main office will be closed. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after a Teacher Workday and Staff Development Day.

GFES Mental Health Team Presents... 🔬 STEAM Lab Updates

In kindergarten, we have taken a break from the ABCs of STEAM to complete a March Creativity Challenge. The goal of creativity challenges is to help students think in different ways. This week, they did a “Finish the Picture” Challenge, where students completed a rainbow but couldn’t be a rainbow! Next week, they will complete a Clovers Challenge, the goal of which is for students to turn as many clovers as possible into recognizable objects in only 3 minutes.

In first grade, we have taken a break from the ABCs of STEAM to complete some March Engineering Design challenges. These are perfect opportunities for kids to work together to solve complex problems using their creativity and the engineering design process.  This week, the challenge was to build a wheelbarrow for the leprechaun to carry his gold.  Needless to say, this was very hard for many of the students!  We used this opportunity to talk about how our original plans don’t always work, but we shouldn’t give up--we can change the plans and try again!  Next week, the challenge is to build a ladder to help the leprechaun get to the top of the rainbow.

Second-grade students have been working on their Leprechaun Tower Challenge.  They needed to plan and construct a tower to hold the leprechaun's pot of gold (container full of pennies) using only the materials provided.  For this challenge, we have been learning about all the steps of the Engineering Design Process.  Next week, they can go back and see if they can improve their towers to make them better and stronger!

Third-grade traveled to Ancient China and learned about the movable printing press.  This mission began with a letter explaining the improvements to the spread of information from inventions and engineering. Students then created movable type printers to optimize their printing time.

Fourth-grade students started the NEXT National Park Challenge. This challenge will guide the students through a research project and then an engineering design challenge. Right now, students have learned about the history of National Parks and are virtually exploring five National Parks. They will then pick one National Park to research and make a presentation.

Fifth-grade is wrapping up their robotic arm challenge.  They used what they learned previously to design and build a robotic arm that can pick up various objects.  We will be testing them next week.

The sixth-grade students are continuing the Eco-House Extravaganza Challenge.  They use a poster board to plan out the location of each part of their home, then label each “zone” with colored paper.  Next week, we will do a gallery walk so they can share, get peer feedback, and make any modifications.  After spring break, they will begin to build their final prototype.  I have encouraged students to bring any supplies they may need from home.  Earlier this week, I sent out suggestions through Talking Points.

🧪STEM Events in our Area

There are some very cool STEM events happening online and in DC.  These events are FREE with advanced registration.

Navy League of US STEM EXPO

Geared toward 5th through 12th grade students, this free event inspires and empowers students interested in science, technology, engineering and math careers.Students and parents are invited to enjoy interactive STEM workshops, hands-on demonstrations, STEM career information, networking opportunities and more.

Dear GFES Families,

📅Looking ahead to next week, we have another full calendar of activities!  Monday is a full day of classes followed by a student holiday on Tuesday, March 5 - Virginia Primary Election Day.  When we return on Wednesday, we have Spring Picture Day.  On top of it all, we will celebrate Read Across America week with fun activities geared toward promoting strong literacy, encouraging a love for reading among children, and fostering lifelong learning habits. This year’s theme celebrates the diversity of literature and the joy of storytelling, enriching cultural understanding and empathy.

🏫Kindergarten Orientation is also coming up on April 12. Please share the word with any new neighbors or families of rising kindergarten students. Information about registration is also included in the message below. Early registration for all grade levels helps us plan for the upcoming year including hiring classroom teachers. Families with new students in any grade level (K-6) can contact our front office to begin the registration process.

🎵March is "Music in Our Schools" month, and all students at Great Falls ES will participate in March Music Madness with Mrs. Forrest.  Each day, on the school news show, students will listen to two songs submitted by their teachers and vote on which song they like better.  Mrs. Forrest will fill out a bracket outside the music room based on the classroom votes to see which song reigns supreme as the Champion of March Music Madness!

🌙 This year, the first full day of Ramadan is Monday, March 11. In Islam, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. During this month Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset each day while striving to increase their spirituality, through prayers, charity and good deeds. Read more about Ramadan in National Geographic Kids.

Throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, families are encouraged to contact Sara Harper regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

We are looking forward to another great month of learning with you,
Sara Harper

Dear Great Falls ES Families,

Every day, our students are learning and growing in numerous measurable ways. We’ve recently completed our winter round assessments and would like to celebrate some of the measurable academic accomplishments with you.

Our students are high achievers. More than 60% of our students are already demonstrating they understand grade level math concepts the state of Virginia expects them to learn by the end of this school year, and more than 75% of them are reading and comprehending at a level we expect to see by the end of the year.  Additionally, our teachers continue to meet students where they are and encourage even more growth. The iReady assessment sets a realistic goal for how much each student should grow in a year and 40% of our students have already met that yearly growth goal in reading, with 33% meeting it in math. Some have already doubled their expected growth!

We have so much to celebrate and are so proud of our students, staff, and families for all of their hard work.  We will continue to work to grow our students’ academic achievement as well as social-emotional well-being.

Thank you for your partnership,

Sara Harper

Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, we have celebrated the 100th day of school, Kindness Week, and Valentine’s Day.  Along with these wonderful celebrations, we continue to honor the achievements and contributions of Black Americans within our curriculum and recognize their central role in U.S. history.

Our FCPS elementary curriculum provides teachers with instructional resources to deliver meaningful opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round and specifically during Black History Month. Some of this learning is embedded in the social studies curriculum, and additional resources and activities are provided to teachers in February.

Beginning next week, we have a special Black History segment planned on the morning news each day.  These segments will highlight notable examples of Black culture and excellence in history and today.

On the final day of February, we will host a Ruby Bridges Walk at School Day, where we will encourage students to walk the track during recess in honor of Ruby Bridges, the first student to desegregate a public school in Louisiana.

SR&R Review Information

Over the past few weeks, all GFES students received a midyear Student Rights and Responsibilities (“SR&R”) review lesson. I am sending this communication so that you are aware that an updated discussion took place.  During this lesson, we discussed FCPS expectations for students, their rights, and the proactive steps we take at Great Falls ES to keep our community and learning environments safe.

The following topics were included in the SR&R review lessons:

  • M.A.R.K. (Mindful, Accountable, Responsible, Kind) expectations: Together, we reviewed what students who demonstrate these traits look like and sound like in 4 key locations in our school: hallways, cafeteria, recess, and bathrooms.
  • Technology Use (Grades 3-6): We discussed the importance of having cell phones off and in backpacks during the school day. Students are always welcome to visit the main office to contact parents if necessary. Students who use their cell phones during the school day are subject to disciplinary action according to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities. As a reminder, smartwatches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. The only time they may be out for use is if a teacher has approved them for instructional purposes. Additionally, a student should not be using a personal phone or smartwatch to record another student or a staff member.
  • Digital Citizenship (Grades 3-6): Students were reminded to use their school computers and accounts only for school-related activities and projects. The acceptable use policy that is defined in the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities states, “Students are expected to use the technology ethically, respect the privacy and work of others, leave the workstation(computer) in good condition for the next user, and generally follow established rules for safety and security.  The same expectations apply to the use of student-owned devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.”
  • Transportation Before and After School: Students were reminded that all school rules still apply on the school bus or if they are waiting for their parent/guardian at the kiss and ride loop. When on the bus, students should stay in their seats, keep their hands and feet to themselves, keep cell phones and laptops away unless updating parents on their location, and listen to the bus driver.
  • Cafeteria expectations (Grades K-2): We read the book “How Do Dinosaurs Show Good Manners.” Dr. Litz had all students in grades K-2 gather in the courtyard as he conducted the read-aloud. We discussed school-based manners and always say “please” and “thank you.”

For more information on the SR&R, please click here.  If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or our school counselors, Mrs. White and Mrs. Barber.  Additionally, if you have any questions or concerns pertaining to the Student Rights and Responsibilities, please contact Assistant Principal Christopher Litz.

Thanks for your collaboration and support.

Chris Litz

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

Eating Disorder Notification

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

🍜Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge

The Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge will be held on Saturday, March 2, at 10:45 a.m., at Hayfield Secondary School. The event features a public tasting of student dishes and demonstrations from two local celebrated chefs.

The student challenge at the heart of this event is to create healthy, delicious, and culturally diverse school menu items that meet USDA guidelines. Entries will be judged by a panel including celebrity chefs, school food professionals, and local food producers. The public is invited to vote for their favorite dish.

Chefs Najmieh Batmanglij and Chris Morgan of Joon will offer a demonstration at 11:15 a.m. Public tasting of student dishes will get underway at noon.

Student-created dishes from this annual event have been featured on school menus throughout the Greater Washington Region. It is free to attend, but registration is required.

Kindness Week at Great Falls ES

Next week, we will celebrate Virginia Kindness Week!

Among other kindness activities, we will be celebrating each day of Kindness Week with spirit days. The schedule for the week is below.

Thank you for helping us spread kindness this week and every week!

Portrait Of A Graduate

In support of Kindness Week and instilling Portrait of a Graudate skills in or students, consider ways you could support your student in being an ethical and globall citizen in the coming weeks.

As students grow as ethical and global citizens, they can act responsibly, recognize and appreciate the similarities and differences among people and their cultures, and care for their community and environment.

How might your student impact others in their community? Maybe there's a neighbor who could use a pick me up and would enjoy a batch of homemade cookies. Perhaps they have a friend who has been feeling down and would enjoy a friendship bracelet or card. Maybe a relative would get a smile from a Valentine's day card. Some questions you might use to guide your student:

  • What are things others do for you that make you smile? Who do you think might enjoy it if you did one of those things for them?
  • Who do we know that might need some extra kindness this week? What do you think might brighten their day?

Wondering what your child is learning in our STEAM lab?

In kindergarten, we are back to the ABCs of STEAM.  Currently, students are learning about the different types of joints and how they help us move. Next week, we will learn more about kinetic energy and play a game called “Cotton Ball.”

In first grade, like our kindergarteners, we are also back to the ABCs of STEAM.  Last week, we learned about jellyfish and how they move using propulsion. This week and next, we are analyzing the design of an object and creating a kite.  We will then connect this to the concept of symmetry.

Second grade learned about the history of dog sled racing and the Iditarod Trail.  Afterward, they began to design and build a dog sled on a smaller scale! Next week, they will finish building, and we will test their designs. The dog sled will be tested based on two variables (speed and being able to carry the most cargo).

Third grade continues to work on the “Save the Polar Bear, Boat Challenge.” Students have been working hard on planning and have started to construct their boats. We hope to begin testing next week!

Fourth grade is continuing with the Crater Catapults & Moon Making Challenge.  Last week, we learned about the types of space rocks and then craters.  Now, students are putting their knowledge of craters to the test with a catapult engineering design challenge. This week, they begin creating their catapults and will get to test them! In the upcoming weeks, students will be making craters out of Play-Doh. We used up quite a bit of my stash in our bridge-building challenge; any extra donations would be greatly appreciated.

Fifth grade started a robot hand challenge this week.  First, we focused on science, learned about the essential parts of a hand, and talked about prosthetic limbs. Then, using the materials provided (cardstock, straws, & string), students create a movable hand to mimic a real-life hand. We may extend and ask students to make another hand on a larger scale.

The sixth graders started their big Eco-House Extravaganza project.  They will plan and design an energy-efficient, eco-friendly house in the U.S. city of their choice. First, we learned about sustainable and “Earthship” homes and examined examples. We will use a “Planning Game” to brainstorm design components for their eco-houses in the upcoming weeks.

100th Day of School Performance

Join us to celebrate music, learning, the Lunar New Year, and the 100th day of school!

Great Falls students in grades K-3 will perform a short program on Friday, February 9th, at 9:15 am in the GFES Gymnasium. Each grade level will perform one song on their own and a finale with all students in grades K-3. We will be sharing the things we've been learning in music class through songs and dance, and we can't wait to share with you!

Virginia Kindness Week

As part of our year-long emphasis on fostering a positive school environment, we will celebrate Virginia Kindness Week at Great Falls ES from February 12 through February 16.

Kindness is a simple act that can brighten someone’s day.  It can be something significant, like donating items to a charity, or something smaller, like holding a door open for someone.  It can be planned or happen on the spur of the moment. To help get in the habit of spreading kindness, we're asking students to participate in a kindness Bingo challenge. Your student can return their completed Bingo board to their school counselor for a fun prize! We will also be celebrating each day of Kindness Week with spirit days. The schedule for the week is below.

Thank you for helping us spread kindness this week and every week!

Sincerely,
Sara White and Courtney Barber
